The premise behind this series is that every once in a while, someone will say something so stupid that it makes me wish I could go back in time and puncture my eardrums with an icepick so I don't have to hear their stupid bullshit.
Once again, perusing internet forum discussions has yielded a gold nugget of... well, complete horseshit. In a discussion about spiritual delusion, this caught my eye:
I am sure you will agree there are many things in our lives like the existence of god and ghosts, which are based on beliefs, which are a reality for many of us.
Wow, I wish I could unread that. The bold is mine, of course, because I want to emphasize exactly where this tiny ejaculation of irrationality made me blow a gasket.
A reality.
What in the nine hells does that mean? A reality. Is there more than one? My memory of logic class might be fuzzy, but I could have sworn things were either true or false, but cannot be both at the same time. Therefore, to claim that "X is real" can only either be true or false. If it's true, then X is a part of reality. If it's not, then it's not a part of reality. Sounds pretty fucking cut and dry to me.
Ah, but I know what the spiritual apologists reading this page are thinking. "But Kobra, if we ambiguously examine the Many Worlds interpretation of quantum physics, then we can claim that there are countless realities!" And after I'm done eviscerating you for bastardizing legitimate science to justify bullshit, I would demolish your argument by pointing out that these many worlds are all subjective universes within one colossal objective reality. QED, asshole! Why does the concept of scope elude you?
If you're going to try to argue philosophy, you should at least learn what the words you're using mean and how to use them. Reality is objective, as far as anyone who's a part of our objective reality is concerned. (Simmer down, matrix fans.)
