That's the same dread experienced by the part of my brain that has some hope for the future of the human race every time an anti-game critic opens their mouth.
Anti-game critics, bloggers and dead-beat lawyers who have nothing better to do with their time than pin every minor disaster to ever plague America on video games and cite dubious sources to support their unverified claims and file frivolous lawsuits every time someone points out their hypocrisy; are the scourge of the political world.
Shortly after the Virginia Tech shooting, Jack Thompson was on national television running his dick-sucker about how he just knows that the shooter Seung-Hui Cho had trained on "Counter Strike Half-Life" for the shooting. David Grossman, another anti-game critic, described the way Cho held the gun as "moving through Norris Hall methodically firing his weapon as if he were playing a first-person shooter (FPS) video game…" (Source: GamePolitics)
This impulse to attack video games in response to a horrific event can be best described as "ambulance chaser behavior" and can be best associated with immense stupidity.
Let's face it: there are at least one billion (1,000,000,000) gamers in the world today. Hell, we'll be generous to their claims and say there's only 100 million (100,000,000). There are, at most, 5 school shootings per year (another generous number). That's still one out of every 20 million (0.000005%).
If violent video games cause school shootings, why are only 0.000005% of gamers shooting up schools? That's assuming all school shooters are gamers in the first place (which they aren't).
The most frustrating aspect of an ant-game critic is their nack to bluff their way through interviews, combined with their inability to cite a source. Jack Thompson often claims to have a psychological study on-hand that reinforces his arguments, but it's the damnedest thing... I can't seem to find one single incident where he actually cited his sources. Could it be because he's full of bullshit?
Here's a little jewel for you: Violent Games Don’t Cause Youth Violence, Says USC Sociologist. Anti-Game Critics have been given opportunity time, time again to provide a source or scientific study to reinforce their bullshit statements and they've failed to pull through-- we haven't. Sociologists, psychologists, and other -ologists have all attempted to determine whether violent video games cause violent youth, and so far all of their tests have had no results.
What do these assholes do in response to this? They completely ignore it. Even when explicitly asked in an interview.
Interviewer: "Mr. Thompson: Karen Sternheimer, a respected sociologist, said that she found no connection between violent video games and violent youth. What do you have to say to this?"
Jack Thompson: "Gamers are block heads. They send me death threats."
It fills me with rage and contempt every time a major news network plugs them on the air; bolstering their careers and feeding their egos. They've shown to us all that their credibility is about equivalent to Weekly World News or the National Enquirer. And yet they always have their bright, smiling, wrinkled faces glaring back at us from the television while they rant on live national television about how they know for a fact that video games are the cause of everything. They're worse than conspiracy theorists in the regard that they distrust an innocent, ambiguous population of bored teenagers instead of an organized secretive government.
If any of you anti-game critics are reading this page like I know you inevitably will, just shut the hell up. You're embarrassing yourself and you're embarrassing us for being the same species as you. If you can't reinforce your arguments with real science, go preach to your theist congregation. We're sick of having you morons spit bile and lies at us and we're sick of your smear campaign against the video game industry.
