It's becoming increasingly apparent that not only are Americans becoming desensitized to concentrated bullshit, but most of us are too ill-equipped to handle anything other than bullshit. It's a complete shock to everyone's system when, that's right, a politician speaks the fucking truth!
Let me show you an example of what I mean, pulled straight from CNN. When talking about how it would be impractical to govern a country based on the Bible, Presidential candidate Barack Obama said, "Which passages of scripture should guide our public policy? Should we go with Leviticus, which suggests slavery is OK and that eating shellfish is an abomination? Or we could go with Deuteronomy, which suggests stoning your child if he strays from the faith? Or should we just stick to the Sermon on the Mount? So before we get carried away, let's read our Bible now. Folks haven't been reading their Bible."
You can read that any number of ways, depending on how much of the context you remove. However, Obama has a perfectly valid point: It's not a good idea to try and run an entire country based off the Bible. He spoke his mind on an issue that, unfortunately, most American politicians would have bit their tongues. What does James Dobson have to say about this perfectly reasonable sentiment? "I think he's deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own world view, his own confused theology."
Translation: "I think he's interpreting the Bible differently than I do, so he's deliberately distorting it; because my opinion and interpretation are more valid than Obama's!" A lot of people agree with Dobson. You can't make up this kind of idiocy!
On the flip side, the Huffington Post reports that John McCain said, "I don't know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III." I think anyone with a functioning, oxygen-rich brain would agree that an all-out World War III would be reasonable cause to reinstate the draft (though it would have to be modified significantly). But instead of saying, "Yes, that's honest and reasonable," people are calling him a war-monger and spreading conspiracy theories. Why?
Americans don't know how to react to honesty. (The amount of hate mail I've received is an indication of this fact.) We've been bullshitted by the system for too long, and now everyone expects bullshit. I won't even try to think of a way to fix this situation; the damage is so out of my league it isn't even funny.
