I have a special place in my heart for people who claim that "Evolution isn't a fact"-- the part that has the most cholesterol. Every time I encounter one of these chuckle-heads, I immediately feel like going into a barbaric rage and headbutting them repeatedly until one of us blacks out (usually them).
When someone makes this idiotic claim, not only are they admitting that they don't understand how the fucking scientific method works, they're displaying a resolved ignorance to not learn how the damn scientific method works.
It also secures my future as a stroke victim when someone tries to bullshit me with, "Evolution and [creationism] are equally valid theories." Wrong! Observe:
![Estimated is the key word. [There's an image here]](estimated-sci-accept.png)
(While this isn't an entirely accurate representation of how the global scientific community views everything, most scientists would probably agree with the placement of most of the items on that list in respect to each other. You get the damn point, and if you don't, you're an idiot.)
Intelligent Design is an ASSERTION! Not a theory. In order to be a theory, an idea has to be based on evidence (and not an alleged lack of evidence). Don't believe me? Read this.
Ironically, with all the pressure on the legal system to force high schools to teach Intelligent Design "as an equal, alternative 'theory' to evolution," Darwin's Theory of Natural Selection (the theory that explains Evolution) says nothing about the origin of life. The word you deluded morons are looking for is abiogenesis.
The Theory of Natural Selection pertains only to change in inherited traits of a population of organisms over time. Abiogenesis, which is currently the subject of much scientific scrutiny, is the hypothesis (note the lack of the word "theory") that life formed from non-living substances. In case you're not the best critical thinker, let me spell out the obvious conclusion for you: THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING!
Let's review:
- Evolution's status as a theory doesn't mean it hasn't been proven.[source]
- Intelligent Design is not anywhere near as valid as the Theory of Evolution.
- Evolution is a theory about the origin of the species; not of life itself.
I don't expect that this will stop anyone from pursuing their church's agenda, but damn me if I don't try.
Update (06-16-2008):
Evolution has been confirmed and observed in laboratory conditions. If you're still skeptical about evolution, read that article.
