"Happy Holidays," Xmas, and Other Things People Bitch About

Every December, our nation proves time and again how low some Americans fall on the scale of self-delusion and absolute stupidity. At the depths of this cesspool of human intellect, amongst the dregs of human reasoning, lies a group of people so presumptuous and arrogant that they feel the need to cough up their poorly-concocted conclusions in our faces. Here are some of the things that are said, and why they are stupid:

Stupid. Even worse: this quote was taken from a CNN article.

  • "Xmas is trying to remove 'Christ' from 'Christmas.'"
This is bullshit manifest. The "X" in Xmas is derived from the Greek letter chi; the first letter of Χριστος, the Greek word for Christ (source).

Anyone who tries to claim that "the atheists" are conspiring to remove Christ from Christmas is spewing bullshit on full-blast.

  • "Atheists are behind the push for a politically-correct 'Happy Holidays.'"
Neither Chris-- the moderator of EvilBible.com-- nor Bobby Henderson-- the guy who wrote the Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster-- are aware of any push for political correctness on our side of the theological fence. It is believed that the "Happy Holidays" idea originated from either Christians who were worried about pushing their beliefs onto others, or the surviving hippies.

In either case, we're not doing anything; so kindly shut up about us.

Where the hell are they getting their information?

This is slightly off-topic, but that quote was taken from the top of the "comments" posted on the aforementioned CNN article when I first viewed the page and I wanted to point out how stupid it was.
  • "Christmas is a wholly Christian Holiday"
I'd hate to break your bubble of self-delusion (well, not really), but Christmas is, for the most part, a Christianized Pagan holiday (Don't believe me?).

Where in your Bible does it say that Jesus was born on December 25? What does decorating a tree and a fat guy in a red suit have to do with your faith? Not a damn thing.

It's believed that the Christmas tradition was carried over from ancient Rome. When Constantine I converted the Roman empire over to Christianity, a lot of Pagans were unwilling to abandon their faith just because the Emperor commanded it.

I can postulate (but not prove due to a lack of motivation; and therefore citations) that a lot of traditions were "Christianized" and accepted by the Christians to eliminate the social tensions between the two parties.

With that said, Christmas certainly is NOT a wholly Christian holiday (if you feel like emailing me, read up on Mithra first).

There are many other misconceptions, urban legends, and downright falsehoods about Christmas, but I lack the time or the energy to deal with such an insurmountable level of bullshit.

No matter where you stand on the "Happy Holidays" controversy, I wish you a HappyMiserable Extortion Day! (credit to my dad for coining that term).
