The Difference Between Blogs and Other Web Sites
I can speak from experience when I say it's frustrating that people don't know the difference between personal websites and blogs. To prevent further misclassification of my own website, as well as many others, here is a handy guide to help you better determine which label to use and avoid looking like an ignorant jackass when you stumble upon any website.
Blog
Personal Website
Commercial Website
Always displays content in reverse-chronological order.
Often expresses the opinion of an individual.
Profitable?
Most often programmed by the author.
Third-party software is acceptable to use.
Excessive banner ads?
The author utilizes SEO to garner more traffic for profit or attention.
Sells a product or service?
The author can whore him/her website out for a few bucks.
Promotes freedom of information, speech, and press.
Contains at least 10+ mandatory YouTube videos on every page.
Annoying background music?
Only for novices.
Poor use of images?
Only for novices.
Classifies as a "Maddox rip-off website" by all of his fans?
Contrived, pointless, and irrelevant information about the author and their personal life.
Updated every twenty minutes (or less).
The stated goal is usually to sell you something.
Just so we're clear, a green check mark indicates that the category is applicable or true, while the red X indicates that it is not applicable or false.
With the popularity of blogging, personal websites have gone into decline; but they're still there. They lurk behind every corner of the internet, often collecting dust because of their antique Web 1.0 designs. Just because a website has some semblance of an audience, interactivity, and recent updates doesn't mean you can immediately dismiss it as "just another pointless blog."
Pull your heads out of your asses, people!
