Just once I'd like to have a natural disaster without having to listen to people bawling their eyes out on national television for two weeks after it's over. In the case of New Orleans, replace "weeks" with "years" in my previous sentence.
Here's the situation: There was a mine collapse in Utah back in early August of this year (2007). So what do my eyes get treated to when I turn on CNN a full week later? You guessed it. Bob Murray, the CEO of the company that owned the mine, standing around giving speeches while the families of the trapped miners ostracize reporters to give them airtime just so they can say, "God is on our side."
I've heard of slow news weeks, but holy shit! CNN-- the most rusted name in news-- has struck a new low. To be fair, they weren't covering celebrity gossip; so let's call this a lateral move.
The time that wasn't pissed away on people proclaiming how "God will help us through this tragedy" was squandered on saying "we don't feel that Bob Murray is doing enough to help." Who can blame you? He's been standing on a podium giving speeches for a week straight. Instead of-- oh, I don't know-- getting off his ass and personally drilling holes to save the poor bastards? The population of the county the mine collapse occurred in is over 10,000. 10,000 people who could be making a half-assed effort to save the miners (assuming any of them whole-heartedly give a shit) and yet none of them stepped forward.
New Orleans isn't any better. Two years after Hurricane Katrina and people are still living in ruined homes; bitching because the government hasn't given them a nice big check to cover the cost of rebuilding. Hey assholes: stop whining and pick up a fucking hammer!!
I promise you all this: If and when another hurricane comes by and wipes out the county I live in; I won't sit around bitching about people not helping me fast enough... I'll get off my ass and do something. Why should anyone else in this country be held to a different standard?
To anyone who was offended by anything I've said in this article: I want to take special care to tell you that you're a crybaby and I hope you die in a fire.
